Lactic Acid
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) naturally derived from fermented sugars and milk sugars. It works on the skin by gently exfoliating the surface, helping remove dead skin cells and improve natural cell turnover. Compared to stronger AHAs, lactic acid has a larger molecular size, which makes it milder and better tolerated, especially for sensitive skin. It also has humectant properties, meaning it helps attract moisture and support skin hydration.

In skincare, lactic acid is widely used in cleansers, serums, and peels to smooth texture, improve dullness, and uneven skin tone. Regular, controlled use helps soften rough skin, fade mild pigmentation, and improve overall skin clarity without excessive irritation. Because it exfoliates while hydrating, lactic acid is often preferred by people who find stronger acids too harsh. Sunscreen is recommended when using lactic acid due to increased sun sensitivity.
